Why Are Semiconductor Sensors Important For Safety In An Industrial Plant

Manufacturing plants and industries use a lot of energy in the form heat, electricity, and water. They also use a variety of chemicals for the various chemical reactions in these plants. It is paramount that all personnel working here are given a safety drill and are instructed to handle emergencies. One of the common thing that industries do is to employ several safety measures like sensors to detect gas leaks, temperature measurement and pressure changes in equipment.

It is important that temperature is monitored in almost all the devices used in present day industries and even homes. In fact, electronics like computers and tablets must have a proper heat monitor system in place because of the highly sensitive nature of the circuitry.

Temperature sensors

All systems that provide heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are fitted with temperature sensors. These sensors are an integral part of engine control. For the proper functioning of several industrial processes, the temperature has to be stable and accurate.

Types of temperature sensors

The most commonly used temperature sensors are:

  • Thermocouples
  • Resistance temperature detectors(RTDs)
  • Semiconductor temperature sensors.

Thermocouples have a wide temperature range and the RTDs have good linearity, accuracy, and more stability. But semiconductor sensors have other benefits when compared to these two types.

Semiconductor sensors

Semiconductor temperature sensors also known as IC temperature sensors are electronic devices used in several manufacturing plants today are used to detect a change in temperature in any equipment. At a time, several thousand devices can be fabricated from silicon. The most popular semiconductors are AD590 and JM35.

They are more beneficial because:

  • They are really small in size and can be fitted on anything like the PC board, under high power circuitry and even small electronic gadgets.
  • They have a temperature range of -50 degrees C to + 150 degrees
  • They are highly sensitive and have excellent linearity.

The only drawback is that these sensors measure their temperature too and this can lead to inaccurate results sometimes.
